Its no denying that Proton is on an upward trend this year. Their X70, Persona, Iriz and Saga range all recorded either best in class sales figure or substantial growth. In some way this also applies the company most veteran model now called the Exora RC (Running Change). Dealerships across Malaysia has recorded that this MPV also increasing in sales numbers. So, what gives? Considering this body style has been around since 2009. After testing one for my self I can see why. For the price of just RM68,836.78 right now in east Malaysia till end of December for the premium variant, the Exora is a great value. Despite its age you are getting a lot of car for your money.
Of course, pricing and size are not just the Exora main selling point. Handling and performance are also in favour for the Exora. The Proton Exora comes in 2 variants which are the Executive and Premium. On both you get the same carried over 1.6L CFE VVT turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine mated to a cvt with power sent to the front wheels. This engine produces 140 PS and 205 Nm of torque. What is different however is on the exterior. Both still get 16-inch alloy wheels, but the higher premium variant gets a nicer 2 tone finish. As a whole there is no change of the current Exora over the old one aside for new shark fin antenna and a new colour option of Rosewood Maroon. The lower Executive model however omits out the body kit, spoiler, LED daytime running light and the 2-tone black colour roof.
Inside there is new slightly updated dashboard design, instrument cluster and the GKUI “Hello Proton” 7-inch infotainment screen. That last one is only available on the higher premium variant as well a reverse back up camera link to the screen. The resolution however could be better and brighter though. Storage box are plenty and there is a total of 10 cup holders doted throughout the car. A total of 7 adult worthy seats with a configuration of 2-3-2 is available in this MPV. The front seats are comfortable and roomy with Premium variant getting semi leather quilted upholstery and front foldable arm rest. The second row of seats are also as spacious with a nearly flat floor and a roof mounter air con vents and switch. Finally, the third row of space has good headroom and acceptable legroom. The seat can be fold flat 50:50 to open a large cargo area when not in use. The second row can also be fold 60:40 to create and almost panel van like cargo capacity. It is just huge!
From behind the wheel the Exora gets a mix feeling for me. On the downside the hydraulic power steering is slightly heavy at low speed operation and the older punch type cvt still have that slight half a second delay after selecting a gear before engaging completely. But other than that, everything else is rather positive. Power and torque from the engine are good down low making the Exora feels powerful during acceleration up to around 100km/h where the boost from the turbo reach it maximum capacity and the peak torque will slowly loose out. What is more entertaining is that you can hear the turbo spooling sound from inside the cabin making it feel like you are driving pick up of highly tuned car. That hydraulic power steering that make it heavy earlier at slow speed shines at higher speed with good and stable road feel. Suspension is tune slightly more to the firm side of things but it not uncomfortable or harsh by any means. I just meant the Exora is the better and capable handling 7-seater out there. Sound insulation also noticeably better than older Exora.
Standard equipment list for the Proton Exora base Executive model is not much with just basic power windows, door locks, mirrors and reverse parking sensors. Safety features are also just the basic with dual front airbags, ABS brakes with EBD and seatbelt pretension limiters. The variant that you really one is really the Premium variant. With this variant you’ll get power folding side mirror, leather wrapped multi-function steering wheel, cruise control, 4G in car wifi, the previously mention exterior enhancements and wheels. On the safety front stability control is added. Prices for the Proton Exora Executive trim starts at RM 61,201.22. All Exora comes with 5-year or 150,000km warranty and has the option of 5 colour choices. They are Snow White, Ruby Red, Indiana Grey, Cocoa Grey and that new Rosewood Maroon.
The Proton Exora RC in conclusion appeals to large family that really need an affordable 7-seater MPV. But you cannot deny that it is getting long the tooth and in major need for a replacement. For now, this MPV from Proton remains relevant and competitive. For how long? Of course, all of us are expecting the Geely Jiaji to replace the Exora soon but with the change also expect a hike in price tag as well for Proton’s sole 7-seater model.
